The Prince of Wales Behavioral Health Coalition met on September 19 to discuss it's role and progress on the strategic plan developed through the Prince of Wales Behavioral Health Planning Project.

July 5, 2011

Helping Ourselves Prevent Emergencies (H.O.P.E.) was recently awarded a Comprehensive Behavioral Health Prevention and Early Intervention Services Grant by the State of Alaska Division of Behavioral Health to develop and implement a domestic violence prevention program for Prince of Wales Island. Congratulations H.O.P.E.!

The Prince of Wales Health Network assisted in preparing the grant application, and will be working closely with H.O.P.E. over the next 3 years to coordinate activities and goals. H.O.P.E. is currently seeking a full-time Prevention Coordinator to manage this project.

The Prince of Wales Behavioral Health Coalition held its first meeting on May 9. The coalition will be charged with following up on the strategic plan developed this winter and spring through the Prince of Wales Behavioral Health Planning Project.

May 11, 2011

The Prince of Wales Health Network was recently awarded a Rural Health Network Development Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP) for $180,000 per year for up to 3 years, totaling $540,000 (D06RH21678, May 1, 2011 - April 30, 2014). This funding will allow the Prince of Wales Health Network to continue facilitating collaboration in healthcare on Prince of Wales Island.

Esther Hammerschlag, Network Director of the Prince of Wales Health Network, was recognized as the 2011 Outstanding New & Emerging Network Leader of the Year during the 3rd Annual National Cooperative of Health Networks Awards Luncheon held in Scottsdale, Arizona on April 18. The Outstanding New & Emerging Network Leader Award recognizes extraordinary leadership activities demonstrated by a health network leader/director who has held the position for less than 5 years.

The final report for the POW Behavioral Health Planning Project (2009-2011) is now available for download. The final report includes conclusions of the needs assessment study, the strategic plan for behavioral health services on Prince of Wales Island, and meeting minutes from the project.

A two day strategic planning meeting was held January 26-27 in Craig to discuss the behavioral health services available on Prince of Wales Island (POW), and begin developing a strategic plan to address the full continuum of services on POW, from prevention to intervention, treatment and aftercare. Participants included local residents and stakeholders, service providers, and State representatives.
